We are only days away from the conclusion of the fall nutrition challenge. Congratulation to the nutrition challenge participants for working hard over 7 weeks! There were a lot of great photos showing their commitment throughout the challenge that inspired many others in the BIG Community (including this photo by contest winner and nutrition challenge participant, Bill Hannigan!).
Challenge test out is this Sunday, November 19, between 8:00 am-12:00 pm the day after Beat the Streets! The sign up for post-challenge skinfold measures is at the box and needs to be before a workout, only takes about 15 minutes, and it best completed in shorts.
While skinfold measures can be tracked over time to show progress, changes can take some time. Nutrition combined with a workout plan is like a garden, several things are happening beneath the surface and not immediately evident, but given time and proper attention, more obvious changes happen that can be seen. In the meantime, there are a number of ways to know if the efforts that you are putting forth are paying off:
- Having more energy during the day and during workouts.
- Knowing options for eating that help you feel more satisfied and fuller.
- Feeling stronger.
- Recognizing when you are hungry and when you have had enough to eat.
- Feeling better in your clothes.
- Having fewer GI issues.
These are important markers that you are moving in the right direction. The six weeks between now and the New Year can be tough with holiday party offerings. Enjoy the season, especially the time with friends and family. Add life to your years with moderation of food and drinks, not deprivation. You will be happier and have many more celebrations with family and friends.
Happy and healthful eating,
Donna G. Pertel, MEd, RD, LDN
